The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science. He to whom the emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand wrapped in awe, is as good as dead –his eyes are closed. The insight into the mystery of life, coupled though it be with fear, has also given rise to religion. To know what is impenetrable to us really exists, manifesting itself as the highest wisdom and the most radiant beauty, which our dull faculties can comprehend only in their most primitive forms–this knowledge, this feeling is at the center of true religiousness. About This Quote

Friedrich Nietzsche , the German philosopher, philosopher, poet and composer was an individual who had quite an interesting life. He was born in Germany in 1844, the son of a Lutheran pastor. At the age of 19, Nietzsche was in his final year at Bonn University where he earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree in philology. After he graduated, he went to work for the Prussian state as an officer in the army stationed in Weimar.

The war ended shortly after he began working for Weimar and he returned to Bonn. When Nietzsche heard that his mother was dying, he left Germany to be with her for five months. When she died, he went back to work at Bonn University and continued teaching until 1879 when he took a three year leave to write his first book, The Birth of Tragedy.

He returned to Bonn after completing the book and worked there until 1885 when he retired due to health problems. After retiring, Nietzsche became increasingly reclusive and obsessed with writing his next book which would be titled The Gay Science . During this time, he also suffered from what would later be known as a nervous breakdown or a “break with reality” as it is commonly referred to today.

This would bring on a long period until his death where Nietzsche wrote nothing before eventually going completely silent for some time. In 1900, Nietzsche’s sister Elisabeth found him dead in his room at Ermenonville near Paris on January 5th at age 56 from complications from a stroke.
